Review: Match It !, yet another challenging game for Windows Phone [Sponsored]

Windows Phone Store has seen a lot of new and amazing games in last couple of months. It is now impossible to track each and every app & game that joins the store. Today we are looking at an amazing game. By amazing we meant not only a great game but a challenging one too. Here's is our review of Match It !, an awesome game for Windows Phone Users.
Match It is a relatively new gaming title that hopes to fall into the 'fun way to pass the time' category. The game tests your reflexes and speed by requiring you to tap the screen as two balls that change color match.
The game has a very decent and simple menu which is quite easy to understand. The main menu has options to view the tutorial, play the game, view your best score and check in on the online leaderboard. You also have a mute button in the upper right corner. The tutorial does a decent job of covering game play and the various game modes.

The game play is simple but challenging enough to avoid being too easy. You have two colored balls that bounce around the gaming screen changing colors. When the two ball's color matches, you have to tap the screen as quickly as possible before the colors change and no longer match.
As you progress with Match It, the conditions of the game can change. You can randomly go from a single tap to double-tap to score points as well as a flashing screen or random vibration to serve as a distraction.
Once you tap on a mismatched pair of colors, the game ends and you have the options to enter a player name and submit your score to the online leaderboard, retry the game or share your score via social networks.
Another feature we missed on top was, the main menu is an annoying full-page ad that pops-up from time to time. I can understand the important of ad-support. It helps the developer earn a little revenue while keeping the game a free title. But the ads should not overwhelm the gaming experience.
All in all, I won't say that Match It is a bust but some may see it as too simple of a game needing a little more sip to keep them coming back for more. Available for low-memory devices, Match It has potential and worth trying.

Download Now

PS- The developer is running a giveway on this app. You can earn $10 voucher by just scoring 3,000 points (Trust me it is not easy to do).

Rocking Lumia 630, 635, 930, or 1520? Then you must be familiar with Motion Data Step Counter app that records your steps which, in turn are used by third party apps like Bing Health & Fitness through SensorCore API. Head to the store and you will find v1.2.0.5 sitting on the store.
Motion Step Counter is based on beta Motion Monitor app that Nokia flagged off in late 2013. You also need the Lumia Cyan firmware to enable.
Today's update likely brings some fixes and optimizations, so if you use Motion Data (it is opt-in), you should grab the refreshed version.

Do you use Motion Data Step Counter on your Windows Phone? Let us know below.

Nokia Tesla on the verge of launching, Microsoft Mobile imports 6,000 dummy units to India

After being exposed off completely by Brazil FCC, we now have another leak stating that Microsoft Mobile has imported 6,000 dummy units for store display into the Indian market. The units, which were just imported two days ago, according to the Zauba database, consist of 4000 orange devices, 1000 green and 1000 white, and with the black device already leaked above, gives up a pretty good idea of what selection of colours the handset will be available in.

The entry also confirms that the Nokia Lumia 830 was code-named Tesla, which of course makes the Nokia Lumia 730 the rumoured Superman handset. Of note with the Nokia McLaren cancelled, it means Microsoft Mobile’s roadmap for 2014 has now been fully delivered, with the next set of devices being the Makepeace and Dempsey coming in Spring 2015.
The Nokia Lumia 830 is said to have a HD screen, Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM, a Pureview camera, 16 or 32 GB of storage with microSD card support and is expected to cost around $399 .
It is expect to be announced very soon, possibly at IFA Berlin on the 4th September.

Lumia 830 leaks with real pics and certification in Brazil exposing all

The Lumia 830 will be the next high end Lumia device from Microsoft.  The device is seen in alleged photos a few weeks ago, along with various bits of information including unique releases for US carriers and a global launch.

Now, the Lumia 830, complete with 'Microsoft Mobile' internal branding, gets caught passing through Brazil's Anatel certification (analogous to the FCC in the US). The phone is all but official now, and so far, it looks to be one interesting phone.
The Lumia 830 measures in at 139.4 mm x 70.7 mm x 8.5 mm, making it relatively thin compared to previous Lumia designs. From the images, we can also see the micro USB charging port is back on top again, near the headphone jack.

The model name is RM-985, though Lumia 830 is confirmed as the commercial release name.

A removal back cover, replaceable battery, and micro SD card are also visible in the accompanying manual.
Unfortunately, since Anatel is like the FCC, the documents do not reveal exact specifications, although there are a few other tidbits gleaned from the photos:

 • The Lumia 1020-like camera housing is present, suggesting the PureView camera rumor is accurate
 • 'Microsoft Mobile' for the first time is seen on the phone label for Anatel/FCC certification; the phone is still branded 'Nokia' though on the front and presumably for marketing
 • The Lumia 830 has a dedicated camera button
 • The Nav bar is hardware based capacitive, not software or on-screen
 • The Lumia 830 obviously has LTE/4G
Rumored specs of the Lumia 830 include a 4.5 to 4.7 inch display that is at least 720P, though 1080P cannot be ruled out. A Snapdragon 800 or 801 is also likely, although the exact processor speed and on board memory are unknown, possibly dependent on carrier choices.

In the US, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile are all expected to get either the Lumia 830 or some variation. The Lumia 830 may be revealed on September 4 when Microsoft is holds a press event in Berlin pre-IFA, signaling a global launch soon-thereafter. The Lumia 730 is likely to make an appearance in Berlin too.

WPCentral shared a couple of pics too of the device which look real. See them below.

HTC 8x still needs to wait for WP8.1.1 update

While the whole Windows Phone community is enjoying Windows Phone 8.1 GDR 1 update, it seems that HTC 8x owners need to wait more for it.  The initial update was released on August 4th this year, adding Folders, App Corner, and many other great tools. But as I mentioned HTC users haven’t received the update due to driver issues. The following tweet from HTC support suggest that HTC owners still need to be patient and wait for the rollout. They do said that they are working on the issue and will release an update once its fixed but the big question is, how much time. This may also affect the newly announced HTC One M8 as users will be worried about the support in near future. Another big question which needs to be dealt with is, Is it a safe move to buy a Non-Nokia Windows Phone device especially when you have risk of missing out the latest updates.
Are any readers hesitant to get the HTC One M8 for Windows after this? Will other HTC users be switching to Nokia/another OEM for better support?

No plans to update the Windows Phone App: Waze

We were pretty surprised when the official Waze app for Windows Phone hit the store in November last year, expecting Google’s purchase of the crowd-sourced mapping and navigation app in June 2013 to put an end to development.
It seems in the end it was merely a temporary reprieve, as a 9th July tweet from their customer support on Twitter has confirmed the company has no plans for any further updates to the app. That app was last updated on the 25/2/2014.
The app as likely a victim of Google’s animosity towards Windows Phone, as otherwise it seems rather interesting that a small company like the pre-purchase Waze could find the resources to support Windows Phone while a giant like Google can not.

Download links of August Update removed, Microsoft advices to Uninstall

Microsoft has removed the manual download links for the x86 and x64 files for its new Windows 8.1 August update, a few days after they went live, thanks to two bugs that have been discovered since they were released.

Microsoft added a few new features and improvements to Windows 8.1 in this latest update, including some additional touchpad functions, some new APIs that will enable OEMs to add Miracast support and more. However, the support page for the August update does show two known issues with this update: "fonts do not render correctly" and "systems may crash with a 0x50 Stop error message (bugcheck)." As a result, the support page says, "Microsoft has removed the download links to these updates while these issues are being investigated."
It's unknown if the automatic updates for these files have also been halted.

We are getting nearer and nearer day by day to the unannounced high end device from Microsoft. Today brings a new set of photos from a Chinese source that allegedly show the upcoming Lumia 830 smartphone, and this time the shots show that the Windows Phone 8.1 will come in many different case colors.
The images come from a Baidu account and show the screen, with other images showing that the device has green, orange and yellow cases. It also shows that this particular model has both capacitive and software buttons, but it's likely that this Lumia 830 version is a prototype rather than a full production model.
See the images after the break.

Microsoft is expected to officially reveal at least one, possibly two, new phones on September 4th at its IFA press event in Berlin, Germany. In the meantime, what do you think of these new images?

Open HTC Bootloader will let users install WP8 on their Android M8

Nokiapoweruser reports on an interesting rumour from Upleaks, a successor to evLeaks who was apparently blessed by him.

According to Upleaks the boot loader on the HTC One for Windows will be identical to the boot loader on the Android HTC One M8, meaning that in theory one could flash the Windows Phone 8.1 firmware to the Android version, and also vice versa.

NPU suggests this will make the handset popular with power users, but with windows phones generally cheaper than Android devices, we may very well see the device sell very well, possibly for the wrong reasons.

Would this rumored feature make our readers more inclined to purchase the device? Let us know below.

Windows 8.1 'August Update' now available ahead of Windows Update launch

Microsoft has officially released the Windows 8.1 'August Update', which was formally known as Update 2 during development. The update was originally set to include a number of new things including a new Mini Start, but that feature was pulled at the last minute, leaving only small insignificant changes.

The update includes the following changes:

 • Minimizing login prompts for SharePoint Online – reduces the number of prompts with federated use in accessing SharePoint Online sites. If you select the “Keep me signed in” check box when you log on for the first time, you will not see prompts for successive access to that SharePoint Online site.
 • Precision touchpad improvements – three new end-user settings have been added: Leave touch pad on when a mouse is connected; allow right-clicks on the touchpad; double-tap and drag.
 • Miracast Receive – exposes a set of Wi-Fi direct APIs for Independent Hardware Vendor (IHV) drivers or OEM drivers to develop Windows 32-bit applications that run on all supported x86-based or x64-based versions of Windows 8.1, enabling the computer as a Miracast receiver.

The update is 171MB for 64bit and 101MB for 32bit. It's currently unknown how big the update is for ARM processors, however we assume it'll be somewhat similar to the size of the 32bit variant.

Will you be downloading the update now, or will you opt to wait for Windows Update to automatically install it for you? Let us know below.

 • 36 x 70.6 x 9.35 mm
 • Weight 160g

The HTC One Ultrapixel camera confirms the device has the same 4 megapixel camera as the HTC One, which has great low light performance, but is otherwise uninspiring.
The camera will however also bring HTC’s nifty U-Focus feature, which allows one to refocus a picture after taking it.

The HTC DOT VIEW CASE will also bring much of the features of the Android version including:

This case lets you see who’s calling, then answer or decline the call without opening it. Just swipe to answer or simply put it to your ear. It also shows you the date, time, weather and reminders. You can also instantly access Cortana by simply swiping down.
The handset is expected to be announced on the 19th August, and could hit the market as soon as the 21st August, of course exclusive to Verizon.

The pre-orders for the device on Snapdeal are already sold out, and it looks like consumers who haven't managed to get their order in have to wait until the third week of August, which is when the device is slated to launch in the country.
The Lumia 530 is also listed on Flipkart, although the page only mentions that the device is "Coming Soon." Interested users can be notified of when the device is in stock by registering their interest on the site.
As for the details of the Lumia 530, the device is the most affordable Windows Phone 8.1 device, and while Microsoft India hasn't officially announced the pricing yet, it is believed that the device would not exceed Rs. 8,000 ($130) in India. 8018830f error = fixed , for some using 8.1 Update Preview for Developers (Updated)

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore just commented on Twitter "It was a "packaging problem" with the update. Try again and it should work." He then goes on to say "Still working on the "low storage" install prob 80188308. Note, this is not USER storage you can clear- it's install partition. Sit tight."

Microsoft may have finally addressed installation problems with the Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 Preview for Developers. The issue initially started when Update 1 for Windows Phone 8.1 Preview began on Monday and a few users downloaded the update, but it would not install. The associated error code is 8018830f, and Microsoft's Joe Belfiore tweeted that they were investigating.

Ever since yesterday, we have received a few tips that those with the previous 8018830f error are now getting Update 1 to their phones. However, within the last hour we have received multiple tips from users who are now being alerted to the update being available, along with a successful installation. The fix may also address those with the even more rare 80188306 error.

Heading into our 8.1 Update 1 forums, there are others also confirming the fix is in place. However, not everyone with the reported error is getting the update, so it is not clear if there is a rolling fix in place or there are other factors in play. One common denominator for a successful update seems to be having Lumia Cyan installed, in addition to being mostly Lumia 925s.

We field it to you though. Let us know in comments if either the 8018830f or 80188306 errors have been resolved for you and your phone. Likewise, jump into our 8.1 Update 1 forums for more information or if you have any questions.

Some more specs of Lumia 730 leaked:

File photo by: wpcentral.com

The Lumia 730, rumoured as "Superman," may be a forthcoming successor to the mid-range Lumia 720 from early 2013. Yesterday, the first photos of the device came forward, along with the new firmware, codenamed 'Debian Red.' At the time, the one piece of the puzzle missing came down to specifications. Luckily, we now have some more information to connect the dots.

According to our source of the original photos the Lumia 730 looks to be the ideal mid-range Windows Phone 8.1 device, as the specifications (if accurate) should please most at this price range.

We should caution that these specifications are unofficial and therefore could change.

Lumia 73x "Superman"

 • 4.7-inch (likely FWVGA at 854 x 480, but possibly 720P)
 • 1 GB of RAM
 • Quad-core processor (unknown speed)
 • 8GB internal storage
 • Micro SD expansion up to 128 GB
 • 6.1 MP rear camera
 • 5MP front-facing camera
 • Dual SIM
Although the processor speed is unknown, it is likely Snapdragon 400 with a 1.6 or 1.7 GHz CPU. It seems unlikely that Microsoft would opt for the higher-end Snapdragon 800 in this series due to pricing constraints. Notwithstanding, a user report claims it feels "really smooth" when compared to the Lumia 920.

The 1 GB of RAM, if proven accurate, could make this phone a sleeper hit if it is priced right. In the past, Nokia has preferred 512 MB of RAM for their lower tier phones. As the original Lumia 720 came with 512 MB of RAM, the chances the Lumia 730 would arrive with the same was a distinct possibility. With 1 GB of RAM and a beefier processor, the Lumia 730 could install any app or game on the Windows Phone store, something that 512 MB phones could not.

HTC 8S will never get the WP8.1 update 1

HTC has announced on their support forums that, after much discussion with Microsoft, that the HTC 8S does not meet the hardware criteria for the Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 Preview. HTC does not reveal the issue, but I suspect it may be related to the small amount of internal storage (only 4 GB) on the handset. In better news however HTC has also said that they will start pushing out the WP8.1 GDR1 update to HTC 8X users, after some time, to assess the stability of the device with the OS. While Microsoft has done an excellent job bringing the software to the cheapest Nokia Lumia, the HTC 8S was always designed as a cheap handset, and as such the expectation of multiple future updates may be limited. Are our readers overly disappointed or surprised by this decision? Let us know below.

Official Windows Phone 8.1 Update 1 changelog

Microsoft has posted the official Windows 8.1 Update 1 changelog.

The list of improvements include:

Windows Phone 8.1 Update
OS version: 8.10.14141.167 or 8.10.14147.180

 • Folders. Folders let you organize your Start screen the way you want. Just push one Tile on top of another one to create a folder and get going.
 • Messaging. Combine multiple text messages into one, and then forward them to someone else.
 • Selection. With improved selection, you can now delete multiple calls, messages, or contacts.
 • Apps Corner. Apps Corner lets you specify apps other people can use on a Windows Phone. Great for individuals and any-sized organizations who want to provide only the essential apps for others to use for work, school, or any other reason.
 • Alarms. Now you can customize the snooze time for an alarm, and then enjoy a little more shuteye for the time you want.
 • Accessory apps. Use accessory apps to get notifications from your phone on your smart watch, active phone cover, fitness tracker, or other kinds of accessories.
 • Internet sharing. Now you can share your cellular data connection over Bluetooth, so you can get an Internet connection on more kinds of devices.
 • VPN. VPN now supports L2TP, which lets you connect to more VPN services. Whether you connect to a VPN for work or personal use, you can do it on your Windows Phone.
 • Narrator. Narrator now has touch typing and a way for you to turn off hints for controls and buttons if you don’t want them read aloud. Some other improvements to Narrator help you unlock your phone a little more quickly, find and use the Back, Start, and Search buttons more easily, and tell you when your phone screen is on or off.

The list is of course not comprehensive, and we know some features such as improvements in IE11 and OEM specific changes are not included, but the update is certainly not insignificant, as we have heard some bloggers calling it.

Chinese OEM HiSense has announced another Windows Phone device. This device named ‘Nana’(model no.E260T) will be the first Windows Phone device with CDMA+GSM Dual-Sim support. Microsoft added this support only in Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 update. Since this device will come pre-installed with WP8.1 GDR1, it will also feature Huna, the Chinese version of Cortana.

Inside the device, you will find 5-inch HD display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor, 1GB RAM, 8MP rear and 5MP front cameras and 8GB internal memory with support for microSD card. The device will go on sale this month for 599 Chinese Yuan (~$100 USD). Tutorial: Activate Cortana Alpha in India, Canada, and Australia

Microsoft promised that they will bring Alpha opt-out version for those on Windows Phone 8.1 GDR1 update. As the Windows Phone team at Microsoft shared a few days ago, the latest update brings Cortana to China and UK in beta and to India, Australia, and Canada in India.
Let's see how we can configure it for Windows Phone devices in these regions.

If you've changed region or language settings previously to try out Cortana when it released for the US, revert to the original settings for your country. A restart maybe required if you change these settings. If you haven't, confirm that the settings are in order.
 • Language: English (India)/English (Canada)/English (Australia)
 • Country/Region: India/Canada/Australia
If you've not made any changes before, you'd need to start here and just change your speech settings.
 • Speech: English (United Kingdom)/English (United States)/English (United Kingdom)
How do you know if it works? Tap the search button, and you'll have Cortana greeting you rather than the vanilla Bing screen. The top right corner will inform you that it's an alpha version, so things might be awry or some features may not be available.

Microsoft goes in controversy again with large sized tiles for Windows Phone 8.1

Not for the first time Microsoft/Nokia have posted a picture suggesting it is possible to enlarge a live tile to not just double width, but also double height.
This new tile size option has been rumoured repeatedly, but so far there is no indication that it is on the way, even in the next GDR1 update to Windows Phone 8.1.
We suggest Microsoft either deliver this new feature, or fire the artist that keeps teasing it.
