PhoneDesigner imagines a Windows Phone with a rotating camera

Imagine a Windows Phone with only one great shooter, capable of being both the front and rear facing camera.

That’s exactly what regular concept builder PhoneDesigner envisioned with his Lumia 945 concept.

His Spinner Phone has a large 4.7 inch screen but is only  7 mm thick, and features a premium aluminium and polycarbonate design with the camera module perched on the top right corner of the handset, capable of spinning both forward and back.

Of course while this design will eliminate quality differences between the front and rear camera, it is likely over the course of months to years it will be the first item to fail on your phone, due to the mechanical stress of a moving part.

What do our readers think of the concept? Let us know below.

Mobile messaging app Threema lands in the Windows Phone Store

Threema is a new mobile messaging app for Windows Phone that is billed as putting privacy first with end-to-end encryption to help insure that your messages can only be read by you and its intended recipient.
We had heard rumblings that the messaging app was in the works for Windows Phone over the summer and it hit Store shelves this morning. Threema's claim to fame is the security it offers through not only its encryption but also the anonymity. You can use Threema without the need for personal information such as email addresses or phone numbers and your messages are deleted from Threema servers after delivery.
At first glance, Threema comes across as an appealing and feature rich messaging option worth considering.
Key features of Threema include:
  • Write text messages and send videos/photographs
  • Share locations
  • Send voice messages
  • Synchronize your contacts (optional)
  • All text and voicemail messages, as well as pictures, videos, and GPS locations, are end-to-end encrypted
  • Verify the identity of a contact by scanning his or her personal QR code
  • Anonymous instant messaging
  • Local files are stored encrypted on your Windows Phone
Threema is also available for iOS and Android devices enabling you to reach out to friends who don't necessarily use a Windows Phone.
The only downside to Threema could be the lack of a trial version but running only $.99, the app is priced where it won't break the bank. If you give Threema a try, let us know what you think of the new messaging app

Microsoft Deploys Autonomous Security at its campus in Silicon Valley

As we are marking this year as Internet of things, Microsoft took a step forward by deploying autonomous security robots at its campus in Silicon Valley. Microsoft has deployed a fleet of 5-feet-tall, 300-pound robots to protect its Silicon Valley campus. These robots includes 360 degree HD security cameras and sensors to monitor the surroundings. The K5 robots come from a California company called Knightscope. It packs lots of capabilities, for example, It can also read license plates and cross-reference them to see if they’re stolen.
The purpose of the K5, like most robots, is straightforward: To replace expensive human workers. The K5 can run for around 24 hours on a single battery charge, automatically navigates back to the charging point when it’s running low, and only takes 15-20 minutes to recharge. Obviously, in the long run, this is cheaper and more efficient than a human security guard — plus, as technology improves, the K5 will probably be more vigilant and capable of spotting smaller discrepancies than a human. In theory, because of the lower cost, you could also field lots of K5 robots, reducing the number of potential holes in security coverage.
Check the promo video by the company below.

Microsoft Lumia 535 Set to Launch in India on November 26

Microsoft India on Friday sent invites for an event scheduled on Wednesday, where it is expected to launch the first Microsoft-branded smartphone, the Lumia 535.
The invite sent by the company reads, "Five days to magic of triple 5." That, of course, is a pointer to the "5x5x5" Microsoft Lumia 535.
Last week, the company had unvieled the smartphone, saying, "the new Microsoft Lumia 535, our "5x5x5" smartphone package bringing a 5-inch screen, 5-megapixel front- and rear-facing camera, and free integrated Microsoft experiences (such as Skype and OneNote) to more people at an affordable price."

The new Lumia smartphone from Microsoft comes in two variants - single SIM (with the same name) and dual-SIM, called the Lumia 535 Dual Sim Support The handset is priced at EUR 110 (roughly Rs. 8,400) before taxes and subsidies.
Both the Microsoft Lumia 535 and Lumia 535 Dual SIM come with identical specifications; except the latter features dual-SIM support. The smartphone runs WindowsPhone 8.1 with Lumia Denim update and features a 5-inch IPS LCD display with a qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution and a pixel density of 220ppi. It also sports Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.
The Lumia 535 is powered by a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor clocked at 1.2GHz alongside 1GB of RAM. There is 8GB of built-in storage that is further expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). Much like other Lumia handsets, the Lumia 535 and Lumia 535 Dual SIM also get 15GB of free OneDrive cloud storage.
One of the highlight features of the Lumia 535 is the 5-megapixel front-facing camera, which is reminiscent of the Lumia 730 and Lumia 735

Microsoft Once Again Teases Siri with the New Ad Campaign of Cortana :)

Microsoft is back once again with its new Cortana vs. Siri advertisement. The company’s latest ad focuses on Cortana’s reminder features, such as traffic-based reminders. The video features the Lumia 830 and iPhone 6 Plus. Microsoft also mocks the iPhone 6 Plus — where the iPhone just “got bigger”. The ad is pretty funny, so make sure to take a look:

As it seems like, the marketing team at Microsoft is currently preparing for the holiday season. The new ad is one of the first and we expect to see some more new ads from the company soon.

Snapchat begins banning 6Snap users

After warning users of third party applications to cease and desist, Snapchat has finally taken action. A Windows Phone user has reported that Snapchat has locked his account for using Rudy Huyn’s 6snap. To be fair, Snapchat is not targeting just Windows Phone users, but people who use Android and iOS third party apps as well. The issue here being that Windows Phone – unlike the other two – lacks an officially sanctioned means to access Snapchat. Therefore users who want to use Snapchat must now then choose to download third-party apps. This means they in effect have two options; don’t use Snapchat or use a third party Snapchat app and get blocked. From the perspective of the user, it simply isn’t fair.
Many people who use Snapchat use it to socialize, Windows Phone, while a small OS has several millions of users. These users have social groups and people who would use iOS and Android and may also chose to use Snapchat. In other words, there is no way for many people to just choose not to use Snapchat. By excluding them, Snapchat isn’t doing the Windows Phone community any favours, nor are they helping their own image in the eyes of the community.

Offline navigation data for Windows Phone gets updated

Head to  Settings> Applications> Maps> Check for updates and you will find a update waiting to be downloaded on your Windows Phone.
The new data appears to be available in many locations including USA and Europe.  As Nokia uses a system which only sends updates rather than the whole maps it is likely the download will be small, so it should not cause too much of an inconvenience making sure that road is actually not one-way.
Here Maps data are owned by Nokia and are widely used in in-car navigation systems and also by numerous 3rd party GPS Navigation apps like Co-Pilot.
We are installing the update. Do let us know if you find anything new in the latest update.

WhatsApp Beta gets ability to select multiple admins in the latest update

WhatsApp is working hard for Windows Phone users and is making continuous improvements in the Messaging app. The latest update to the private Beta enabled users to select multiple admins in the group chat. According to me, this was requested by the major portion of WhatsApp users. The feature can be accessed by holding on any member in your group. You must be the admin of that group to do the same. We are testing this feature and we will see if the new admin(s) have the same rights as of the creator of the group or they are restricted.
For now you as a creator can only add admin(s) and not remove them but I hope we will soon have option to remove the admin(s) also. Check out the screenshot below for the same.

We hope to see more development from all the apps so that we can end up the app gap on Windows Phone. For now let us know your views in the comments. Is this a useful feature for you?

Note: This is the private beta of WhatsApp. Don't ask for the link or how to download it.

Celkon releasing a Windows Phone device by the end of this month

Ever since Microsoft has given licence to different OEMs, we have seen many Indian brands taking interest in Windows Phone. We have already seen devices from Micromax and Karbonn this year and now it looks like another Indian OEM is taking interest in Windows Phone. We posted information about Celkon mobiles releasing Windows Phone back in June.
The news came from Abhishek Baxi, who is one of the author at Windows Central. He posted a detail that the device will be coming by the end of this month and will have 4-inch screen, hinting the fact that the device is supposed to be a low end Windows Phone.
Considering the news, I approached him to dig out other details of the device but unfortunately there is no other information available.
The interesting part of the device will be the price and the specs it will provide. We have much hopes from Celkon considering their previous records of the Android phone launches they had.
We will be keeping Celkon at the top for some days and will be trying to dig out as much as we can, so stay tuned with us.
For now we have a short poll below to see how many of our readers will prefer Celkon made Windows Phones over Microsoft Lumia, Micromax and Karbonn. Be sure to head below and vote your choice.

What Nokia's really proud of is the fact that you can scribble letters on the screen to quickly pull up apps that haven't surface on the list yet. I've been playing with a near-production build on a series of Android phones for the past few days, and it's surprisingly pleasant -- the letter recognition is snappy enough on my Nexus 5, and if you're feeling particularly bored, you can scrawl out Google search queries one letter at a time. Curious for a taste before the N1 hits store shelves? Wunderbar: the final version of Z Launcher will go live in the Google Play Store shortly, complete with support for rooted devices. Don't let anyone tell you that complaining loudly won't get you what you want.

The N1 is a curious little beast, a chimaera of sorts infused with DNA from Nokia, Google and Apple (even though Nokia would probably deny that last one). We're not sure if Nokia can move the needle in a crazy-competitive tablet market, but there is one thing we're sure of: we can't wait to try this thing out.

O2: "Don't expect Denim update for most of devices until 2015"

O2, a carrier in the UK, has responded to a question about the arrival of Lumia Denim update for the other Lumia devices. According to the response, O2 confirmed that it is “coming soon” but not till early 2015 as Microsoft has not yet sent the updates to carriers.

Although the 930 has received the Lumia Denim update, other devices will unfortunately, not snag the update till early 2015. To balance the bad news, O2 gave us some good news that they will test and approve the update as fast as they can and send it back to Nokia for them to release the update.

Here are the replies:

"It's coming, but we're not expecting Microsoft to release these this year we're afraid, though you should start seeing in early 2015... Very early - January at present is what's looking likely."
On the topic of exactly when O2 customers could be seeing the update pushed to their devices, the carrier says they will work as quickly as possible to test it and roll it out:
"We're on standby - as soon as Microsoft are ready to send us these updates for testing & approval, we'll release the update back to Nokia for the final part - pushing it to you guys, our customers."
What do you guys think? Is early 2015 Lumia Denim update arrival understandable? Let us know down below and stay updated with us and we will let you know as soon as O2 starts sending the update.

Tutorial: How to bring back the old Windows 8.1 networks list in Windows 10 build 9879

Microsoft started updating the network selection window in Windows 10 build 9860, removing the old flyout from the charms list and replacing it with a window which opened PC settings. Many consider this change a step backwards, and technically it is as Microsoft isn't done with the new implementation yet. For those who wish to return to the old method, we've got a tutorial for you. Originally spotted by SpaceCore on Twitter, this hack requires editing the registry, so if you're a novice at changing registry strings we advise you do not try this at home. To get the old flyout back in Windows 10 build 9860 and 9879, follow the instructions below:
  1. Open regedit (WIN+R and type regedit.exe)
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Control Panel\Settings\Network
  3. Take ownership of the "Network" key/folder (right click, Permissions)
  4. Select "Advanced" in the Permissions window
  5. In the Advanced window, select "Change" where the owner field is (at the top of the window)
  6. Type in your username and save your changes.
  7. Close the advanced window
  8. Now select "Administrators" in the security tab
  9. Make sure "Full control" is selected, then apply changes
  10. Now that's done, double click "ReplaceVan"
  11. Change it's value from 1 to 0
Once that's done, you'll have the old flyout network selector back. It's unclear why Microsoft decided to implement the new, unfinished version of the network selector so early, especially since the old methods still works in these early builds.

Tutorial:How to enable an early version of the new Start Screen in Windows 10 build 9879

We recently discovered the beginnings of what appears to be the new Start Screen / Continuum mode in the most recent Windows Technical Preview. The Start Screen, being very early in development is very buggy and broken, however we understand that some of you wish to try it out.
Well, we've got you a simple guide for enabling the new Start Screen. We must warn you, it's super broken. We don't advise you use it on anything right now, especially tablets as the Start Screen doesn't even hit full screen mode yet.
If you wish to enable it, follow these steps:
  1. Open regedit (WIN+R and type regedit.exe)
  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ImmersiveShell\Launcher\ (The "Launcher" key may not exist, if not just create a new key)
  3. Add a new DWORD 32-bit
  4. Name it UseExperience
  5. Change it's value to 1
  6. Restart Explorer
Once that's done, you'll have access to the new Start Screen in Windows 10. We must warn you, the Start Screen enable-able in 9879 isn't anything like what's seen in the photo above. To return to the previous Start experience, just change the value back to 0.

It has been a year since VLC started development of the Windows Phone 8.1 of its app. Now it maybe the final steps as one of the developers of VLC for Windows Phone, Hugo Beauzée-Luyssen has tweeted the above Windows Phone App Certification Test Kit result, indicating that the app passes trial certification tests on the user’s own PC.
This does not mean that the app has been certified by Microsoft yet, but does indicate that it likely will.
Here's what Thomas Nigro tweeted:

Here's hoping the team does not encounter any more "unforeseen delays." How many of you are looking forward to the imminent launch of the media player?

Microsoft confirms updating all the WP8 devices to Windows Phone 10 in coming months

We have already seen many rumors about the update of Windows Phone 8 devices to Windows Phone 10, but now we have something really solid to prove the point. Answering to @_Y06_ on Twitter, Microsoft confirmed that all the current Windows Phone 8 devices will be upgradable to Windows Phone 10 in coming months.
We should caution that technically speaking, Microsoft's Twitter account is not necessarily their press channel, but it is rather official. Still, we are currently not aware of any technological limitations as to why current phones could not be updated, reaffirming the @Lumia tweet.
Of course its not official until it happens, and we must remember previous supposedly official tweets saying Windows Phone 7 handsets will be upgraded to Windows Phone 8, but so far we are pretty confident this prediction will come true.

Microsoft Hints At New Windows Phone Dev Preview Update

Microsoft yesterday updated their Battery Saver app for Windows Phone 8.1 devices. Microsoft has now updated the Store listing for this new update v1.0.14201.0. They have provided a detailed change log. One of the new feature included in this update is real time Live Tile for Battery Saver app and it requires Windows Phone build 8.1.14203 or higher. Current Windows Phone dev preview build is 8.1.14192. So, there is a good chance that Microsoft will be releasing it soon.

    • Foreground vs Background metrics: Usage bars now show foreground and background showing you how much power a particular app consumes whether you’re using it or not using it.
    • Time Filters: We’ve added a filter also in the usage view where you can now specify the timeframe of data to look at. Can now show data from the last day, 2 days or a week.
    • What Does Battery saver do anyway?: Re-worded the settings page to more clearly indicate what battery saver mode does.
    • Real Time Live Tile: If you pin the battery saver app to start, it now updates in real time! (Requires build 8.1.14203 or higher.)
    • Quick Settings: You can now add battery saver to the quick settings menu and cycle through the battery saver options there. (Requires build 8.1.14203 or higher.)
    • Turn On until next charge: We added a new option to let users turn on battery saver until next charge!
    • Improved Battery usage scaling: The usage data now scales to actual device battery capacity with full width mapping to 100% capacity. Additionally, the bars now use a logarithmic scaling algorithm to make the bars more visible when usage is small for a particular app.

Finally the day is here as Microsoft has revealed the Lumia 535 with the Microsoft Branding. It is the first smartphone that comes with the Microsoft Branding. The device packs  a 5-inch screen, 5-megapixel front- and rear-facing camera, and free integrated Microsoft experiences (such as Skype and OneNote) to more people at an affordable price.
Lumia 535 comes in two flavors: 3G Single SIM, or 3G Smart Dual SIM, both loaded with Windows Phone 8.1 and the Lumia Denim Update right out of the box.
Lumia 535 features the same wide-angle, 5-megapixel front-facing camera as the Lumia 730 and Lumia 735, the Lumia 535 not only provides you with crystal-clear imagery and the Lumia selfie app, but you’ll also be able to get more in shot during those Skype calls.
Lumia 535 comes with a 5-inch display, 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, and 1GB RAM. Lumia 535 comes with 8GB of memory. If you need more, simply slide in a microSD card, with support up to 128 GB, or use the 15 GB free OneDrive storage to store all your photos or documents.
With the Lumia 535, Microsoft also introduced the stylish flip covers like the one Samsung introduced a year ago.

The Lumia 535 supports Bluetooth LE and can connect easily to the Portable Wireless Speaker, or for those with wires try the Coloud Bang.
Lumia 535 3G Single SIM and Lumia 535 3G Dual SIM will be available from November at an estimated RRP of 110 EUR before taxes and subsidies with sales starting in China, Hong Kong and Bangladesh, with other countries to follow. Also the device will be following the same funky strategy of Nokia and will be available in Blue, White, Green, Black and Orange.
Check the promo video of the same below.

So what are your initial thoughts of the device? Considering the price and specs, will you be getting one when it will be available in your country.

Microsoft’s Office updates are great news for Android and iOS, but hurt Windows and Windows Phone

Microsoft’s Office updates are great news for Android and iOS, but hurt Windows and Windows Phone
Microsoft made multiple massive announcements for its Office suite this week. The big focus was Android and iOS, however, not the company’s own operating systems.
    Here’s a quick recap:
    • Creating and editing is now free on Android and iOS (Microsoft is even offering prorated refunds for Office 365 subscriptions).
    • Standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps are available for iPhone, to match the iPad.
    • Standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps are coming to Android tablets, and then later to Android phones.
In fact, the Android tablet apps that are supposed to match their iPad equivalents are already in preview, and the final release is slated for “early 2015.” The company didn’t share when exactly standalone Word, Excel, and PowerPoint apps would arrive on Android phones, but it did confirm they would replace the individual Office Mobile app, matching the treatment Apple’s iPhone received this week.
Touch-optimized versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint won’t be coming to Windows until Windows 10 availability, which is expected in the second half of 2015. What about Windows Phone? When the equivalent experience comes to Windows 10, it will be available for both tablets and smartphones viauniversal Windows apps.
In the meantime though, iPad and iPhone users already have touch-friendly standalone apps. Android tablet users will see them soon, followed by Android phone users. Own a device with a Microsoft operating system? You can wait.
Windows Phone users are getting the short stick because the platform only has Office Mobile (no standalone Word, Excel, or PowerPoint apps with more features). Windows users are getting an even worse deal: While the platform certainly gets standalone applications that have the full feature set, they are not optimized for touch, and they’re not free (you either need an Office 365 subscription or have to buy Office 2013).
In other words, if you want Microsoft Office on your mobile device, buying a Windows tablet or a Windows Phone is the worse choice. That goes for whether it’s from Microsoft’s own lineup of devices (Surface and Lumia) or from any of the company’s partners that offer Windows tablets and smartphones. An iPad or an iPhone, and soon an Android device, is clearly a better choice.
The Microsoft Band is an excellent example of how Microsoft can and should handle cross-platform support. Android, iOS, and Windows Phone are all treated equally, with the added bonus that if you use Microsoft’s mobile operating system, you get to use a digital assistant (Cortana).
Yet the whole touch-first Office fiasco on Windows is a disaster that Microsoft will be paying for a long time. Sure, at some point next year we’ll probably have Windows 10 tablets and phones that run a beautiful version of Office. By then, however, Android and iOS users will have had such an experience for months. Oh, and it will have cost them nada.

Windows 10 build 9879 leaked in screenshots

While the public version of Windows 10 is still on build 9860, Microsoft is testing build 9879 internally. The latest screenshot leaks shows plenty of new changes in the OS which include new changes to the taskbar, File Explorer and more.
Build 9879 was compiled around November 2, and includes a number of small improvements over the last public Technical Preview build being 9860. According to the screenshots published by IThome, Microsoft is fine tuning certain elements of the UI, as well as adding more options for the user.
One option which users have requested is the ability to hide the Search and Task View buttons on the taskbar. In build 9879, you now have that ability by right clicking the taskbar.
IE11 now has the feedback smilys in the top right hand corner of the window, which allows for submitting feedback directly from IE about IE. In Modern UI apps, the charms bar button drop down menu available in the top left has changed from three dots to the familiar hamburger-style button. It still functions the same, but it now has a more universal look to it.
Microsoft is constantly making several changes in the OS which will officially come somewhere in 2015. Build 9879 isn't expected to reach the public as it isn't labeled as a low flight build, however considering the stability of the most recent builds (being 988x), it's likely that we'll see a new public preview build very soon.
Check out all the leaked screenshots below.

So what do you think about the new changes. Is Microsoft going on the right path? What features do you want in the new Windows 10 OS? Let us know your opinions below.

Microsoft teases first non-Nokia Lumia smartphone unveiling for November 11

Microsoft is getting ready to unveil its first device under the Microsoft Lumia brand. According to a very short post on the Microsoft Mobile site, the news will drop on November 11, 2014.
This will be the first non-Nokia device from the company. All we know for sure right now is that one of the color options will be orange:
    Teaser_632x432
The entire announcement is just 20 words and a hashtag:
Microsoft is delivering the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone.
Come back on November 11, to find out more!
    #MoreLumia
Microsoft’s tease comes two weeks after it confirmed Nokia Lumia would be rebranded as Mirosoft Lumia, a long expected and inevitable change. At the time, the company said it would be “unveiling a Microsoft Lumia device soon.”
As we noted then, “a” implied just one device and “soon” meant it might be available in time for the holiday season. Of course neither of those are set in stone; Microsoft could do something completely unexpected next Tuesday.
After all, the company has already shared shared two images showing off the Microsoft logo on mobile devices:
    FEATbrandblog2
    greenimage3
As we’ve already noted, Microsoft did not directly reference either of the images, but the message was clear: The Microsoft name will appear on at least the front or rear of Lumia devices. Maybe it will be both.
Based on recent rumors, we’re not expecting a high-end device. Chinese site Tenaa recently leaked alleged specs for a low-end smartphone called RM-1090:
    • 5-inch HD Screen
    • 1.2GHz Snapdragon 200 chip
    • Dual-SIM
    • 1GB RAM
    • 8GB ROM
    • 5MP primary camera and VGA front camera
    • 1900mAh battery
    • Dimensions: 140.2×72.45×9.32(mm)
    • Weight: 145.7g
    • Frequency support: 900MHz, 1800MHz, 850MHz, 1900MHz
    • Colors: black, white, gray, blue, orange, blue, green
Clearly the orange confirms everything. Many expect this phone to be called the Lumia 525, though Microsoft could of course name it something else completely. Five more days, and we’ll have all the details.
